Christmas Trees Event in Vaasa

For Seura Magazine, I photographed a remarkable environmental project in Vaasa.

On Epiphany, with temperatures dropping to –16 °C, many residents brought their old Christmas trees to the sea, where they were submerged to serve as spawning grounds for fish. The initiative attracted considerable public interest and proved to be a memorable and educational experience for children as well.

Through this project, the people of Vaasa make a huge contribution to the restoration of nature and local fish populations. In spring, after the perch spawning season, the underwater structures are found covered with eggs.
